About the Artist

Artist portrait

Hi, I’m Tom, I create eclectic, classically inspired contemporary figurative sculptures using a blend of hand and power tools. Although I don’t necessarily consider myself a ‘sculptor’, I do believe I have some sculptures in me.

I have always been keenly interested in visual arts and design. Growing up, overcoming communication difficulties, I used art as a way to express myself. This led to being labelled ‘artistically gifted’ whatever that meant. I went on to complete a foundation course in fine art at Brighton, but having discovered a deep and abiding love of literature, studied publishing at the Nottingham Trent University.

It wasn’t until I inherited some chisels that I began to make with intent again. I was going through a difficult time and they reignited a passion I had never fully explored in sculpture. They reminded me of the simple pleasure involved in trying to create something you find aesthetically pleasing, to the best of your ability.

The pieces I make are usually carved from timber that has been rescued from a forlorn, lonely end rotting away iniquitously around Kent & Sussex in the UK. Each piece has its own character, foibles and imperfections, forcing you to make a series of compromises that come together synergistically to create a final piece’s unique personality.

There is a joy in taking something worthless, overlooked, ignored and trying to turn it into something else. Giving it a renewed purpose. There’s a beauty hidden inside almost everything – sometimes it just takes a little coaxing.

If you got this far thank you for your interest. I'd love to hear your thoughts on my work, or discuss potential commissions. Please don't hesitate to contact me on sculpturesbytom@gmail.com
